Multi-vehicle crash with entrapment in Middletown prompts MedEvac response; crews busy across county with fires, alarms and crashes
Crews were dispatched to RT 17 at Valley View Road near the Middletown water tower at 3:17 pm for a reported vehicle accident with entrapment, and radio traffic later indicated three vehicles were involved and one occupant trapped. RE74 reported on scene confirming the three-vehicle situation and that an occupant remained trapped while BC903 established incident command and requested additional resources, including a second ambulance and a Rescue Squad.
Radio updates show command continued to expand as responders worked to free the occupant. BC903 requested a MedEvac for a reported Pri. 2/B patient and ordered an engine company to establish a landing zone at Middletown High School. C7-B was assigned as extrication group supervisor; subsequent updates indicate the patient was extricated at 3:41 pm and Trooper 3 was airborne en route to Shock Trauma at 4:01 pm, according to the dispatch timeline. Units listed on the original call included A78, A129, ALS8, R20, E72, RE74, C7-B, TRPR3, BC903, EMS901 and SAF901.
The entrapment call followed a busy morning that included a building fire reported at 10:57 am on the 100 block of Key Parkway. E11 reported arriving on scene to a two-story end unit with occupants out and a fire in a second-floor bathroom; C1 was recorded establishing command and crews identified a vent fan on fire. T50 was noted setting up a fan at the front door for ventilation “when needed.” Units listed on that Box Alarm included E11, E31, E121, PE23, E501, R3, TT4, A19, ALS4, C1, BC903, BC901 and SAF901.
Traffic incidents peppered the day. At 12:12 pm crews were dispatched to N. Market Street and E. Thirteenth Street for a reported motorcycle crash; PE23 reported one person down in the roadway and M28 transported a Pri. 2 patient to Meritus at 12:18 pm. Early and late automatic crash notification calls prompted searches that turned up no crashes at the dispatched locations: a 7:25 am automatic crash notification for I-270 SB at the railroad prompted checks of both directions with “nothing found,” and a 4:28 pm automatic crash notification for I-70 WB at Mount Phillip Road likewise resulted in units checking the area and finding no incident.
Fire units also handled smaller vegetation and vehicle incidents. A brush fire reported at 12:44 pm on US-15 NB near the 36 mile marker was recorded as a small fire; BR65 reported the blaze possibly extinguished on arrival and later confirmed it had been put out by a passerby. A vehicle fire called in on I-70 WB at 2:04 pm produced smoke from the vehicle’s exhaust and was investigated by E31, which later reported the incident as a good-intent call with no fire department services required.
Utility and investigation responses closed the day. Wires down and low-hanging wire reports involved PE52 at Knoxville Road and Jefferson Pike in Brunswick at 12:03 pm and later at the 200 block of Knoxville Road at 7:23 pm; the latter update noted a low-hanging wire in front of the dispatched address and that the utility company had been notified. Flooding-condition calls were listed early at 3:04 am on the 5800 block of Tobery Road and again at 4:35 pm on the 5200 block of Maitland Terrace. An outside-smoke investigation in the Bottomley Road/Wilhide Road area led BR226 to advise a homeowner about the annual burn ban and proper procedures.
