Pedestrian struck downtown; county crews answer a day of alarms, rescues and utility calls
Frederick County emergency responders spent much of Thursday managing a series of isolated but urgent calls, the most serious of which began at 1:35 p.m. when units were dispatched to a reported pedestrian struck in the 100 block of Thomas Johnson Drive, at Frederick Foot & Ankle. Command was established when BC902 arrived on scene at 1:38 p.m. with one person reported down in the roadway. M299 later transported a Priority 2 patient to Meritus, and remaining units cleared the scene, FredScanner later reported.
Earlier in the day crews answered multiple alarm activations and odor investigations that proved to be false alarms or small, contained incidents. At 7:49 a.m. PE311 and TT4 were sent to the 7400 block of Marcies Choice Lane for a commercial fire alarm at the county wastewater plant; PE311 arrived at 7:54 a.m. and found nothing evident on the two-story industrial facility but later located an overflowing drain and reset the alarm system at about 8:05 a.m.
At 8:26 a.m. crews were dispatched to the 5600 block of Wade Court in Ballenger Creek for a reported unknown odor inside a three-story garden-style apartment building. PE311 reported normal conditions on initial assessment but then forced entry on a first-floor apartment to investigate a burning odor; crews found burned food on the stove and began ventilating the unit, according to the verified updates.
Midday calls included a mountain rescue dispatched to the 6600 block of Zittlestown Road at Washington Monument State Park at 12:57 p.m., where a sizable multi-unit response was recorded on the run sheet. The mountain rescue entry lists E51, E82, WCE161, A89, ALS8, WCR2001, WXSUTV8, UTV16, BC903, SAF900 and EMS901 among units assigned; no verified updates were posted in the run logs provided.
Through the late afternoon and evening, responders addressed a transformer smoke report and multiple traffic and fire-related calls. At 6:34 p.m. PE102 arrived on scene at the 100 block of Emmitsburg Road in Thurmont and reported no active fire after a caller reported seeing smoke from a transformer; Thurmont Power & Light was notified. At 9:01 p.m. PE251 reported an outside fire in the 10500 block of Cook Brothers Road in Green Valley had been extinguished but would continue to smolder through the evening.
Traffic-related responses included two automatic crash notifications that drew units to search areas where no incidents were ultimately found. At 6:04 p.m. an automatic crash notification sent A129 and E121 to Deer Spring Road at Potomac Avenue in Braddock Heights; units checked the area and reported nothing found. Later, at 10:38 p.m., A78 and RE74 checked the 100 block of Woodmere Circle in Middletown after another automatic crash notification and also reported nothing found.
