MedEvac Called After Pedestrian Struck at Walmart; Day Also Brings Multiple Vehicle Fires, False Alarms and a Mall Elevator Motor Burn
Emergency responders converged on the Walmart parking lot on Monocacy Boulevard Thursday afternoon after a report that a pedestrian had been struck. At 4:56 pm crews were dispatched to 2400 block Monocacy Blvd — Walmart with units A249, ALS29, E111 and EMS901. FrederickScanner later reported EMS901 on scene at 4:57 pm with “one down in the parking lot.” At 5:09 pm EMS901 requested MedEvac for a Priority 2/B patient and M249 was routed to rendezvous with Trooper 3 at their hangar; at 5:22 pm M249 was reported transporting the patient to the hangar.
The pedestrian incident was the most consequential call of a busy day that also included two vehicle fires. Early Thursday morning at 5:02 am Montgomery County requested mutual aid for a vehicle fire on I-270 northbound between Rt. 109 and the Frederick County line; units E231 and E232 were dispatched. Later in the evening at 5:57 pm Frederick units E331, E31 and volunteer unit VOLAC900 were sent to I-70 westbound just east of Rte. 144 after a vehicle was reported with a blown motor; VOLAC900 reported on scene at 6:00 pm with that assessment.
False alarms and malfunctioning systems kept fire companies active throughout the day. At 6:49 am units E152 and TT4 went to the 5800 block of Billet St in Lake Linganore — Oakdale for a commercial fire alarm; E152 reported on scene and that occupants had evacuated and the audible alarm was sounding. E152 later investigated and reported the alarm system malfunctioned. Multiple subsequent alarm notifications from the same Billet Street address drew E152 back to the location at 7:15 am and again at 7:43 am, during which crews coordinated with property management and the alarm company attempting repeated remedies.
Commercial alarms also drew crews to Worthington Boulevard at 11:05 am for Ledo Pizza (units E231 and TT23) and to Spring Ridge Parkway at 9:02 pm for Spring Ridge Senior Apartments (units E331 and T50). At the Worthington Boulevard call TT23 and E231 reported nothing hazardous and crews attempted to reset a common alarm system. At the senior apartments E331 located a faulty detector and reported the alarm had been reset by 9:36 pm.
Thursday’s radio traffic also included several automatic crash notification (ACN) activations that did not involve obvious crashes. At 10:54 am units including E121 and E31 responded to I-70 eastbound at Mount Phillip Road for an ACN; E121 reported it recovered a cell phone that had fallen onto the roadway and triggered the alert. A later ACN at 7:47 pm near RT340 eastbound at Jefferson Technology Blvd had E31 find a cell phone along the roadway that also initiated the notification. E121 and E31 were held while crews checked the areas and then returned to service once the triggering devices were located.
Other notable calls included an outside fire on the 2400 block of Thurston Rd at 5:07 am where PE251 reported a power line had come down into a fire pit and extinguished a small fire, and a late-evening commercial alarm at 8:42 pm at 5500 Buckeystown Pike — JCPenney in the FSK Mall where PE311 and TT4 investigated a burned motor in an elevator room and coordinated with elevator mechanics to secure power and address the problem.
